Art Deco pottery was created in a style that has followed closely on the heels of Art Nouveau. It was created in France in early 1910, distributed throughout the world and then lost influence on the outbreak of the Second World War.
Art Deco was originally called modern art or art decoritif. This has caused much confusion in the United States because when Americanized, the term is translated with "modern art." This label has become a generic term that covers a wide range of 'modern' styles related to age the machine. Labels such as "Modern Jazz" and "Zig-Zag" Modern were also common.
The term we use today – ART DECO – did not become popular until the 1960s. In his time, the style was called by the French terms Arte Moderne or modern style.
Here is a brief discussion concerning 10 historical influences and stylistic art deco POTTERY.
- ART POTTERY: Pottery Art First developed in England as a reaction to the industrialization of the ceramic industry. The pottery was made at the both by individual potters and studios created specially created by leading manufacturers. Large, established pottery have been quick to adopt some form of handicraft. Soon dozens of pottery emerged in America. The decoration was based on natural forms and use glazes popular as dull green and turquoise.
- NEW ART: Art Nouveau climaxed in the last decade of the 19th century and continued during the early years of the 20th century. He is known for its distinctive whiplash curves and flowing lines. They were drawn the nature and the human figure.
- ARTS AND CRAFT MOVEMENT: The Arts and Crafts movement was a movement of 19th century social reform and Art. It has affected attitudes towards craftsmanship in England, Europe and the United States. As to the art of pottery, it has developed as a reaction to mass industrialization that occurred in the mid-18th century.
- Ballets Russes: Beginning in 1909 in Paris, the Ballets Russians have gained international influence. Sets and costumes directly influenced French art deco designs in all media. The ballet was known for his use of bright colors. She immediately changed color and decoration strongly affected the styles of the period.
- BAUHAUS: The Bauhaus was a school that provides instruction in the design and architecture. It is only in existence from 1919-1933, but he had lasting influence of art deco pottery. Bauhaus pottery also unadorned, clean shapes designed for maximum operational efficiency.
- Czech Cubism: Cubism Czech impregnated small-scale household items with the monumental usually reserved of architecture or sculpture, a quality unique among functional ceramics. The style reflects the abstraction of French Cubist filtered through the ideology of a Bohemian group of Czech architects.
- De Stijl: Although the group of Dutch artists and architects who make up the confederation De Stijl were not known for ceramics, their style has influenced. They were known for geometric shapes pure, primary colors, the very attributes that have helped define the modernist aesthetic.
- Disney cartoon characters: The first incarnation of Mickey Mouse first appeared in 1927. In 1920, Paragon China (Staffordshire company) announced it had signed an agreement with Walt Disney exclusive rights to cartoon characters on their porcelain. When their rights have expired in the mid-1930s, several other companies began with the characters.
- Futurism: The Italian Futurist movement was founded in 1909. Originally a literary movement, it quickly attracted great artists and has evolved into an innovative approach to the arts of all kinds. The Futurists hoped to infiltrate the middle class homes with symbols that would transform lifestyles. They were known for their functional approach and for flights of pure fantasy. They created the tiles, dishes and vases, and even planned ceramic route.
- The Russian Revolution: The first revolutionary porcelains were produced in Russia shortly after the October Revolution 1917. Expensive to produce, the work was a bit out of proportion with the Soviet values. Ceramics have a glamorous world of art because of the involvement Direct seminal figures in early modern art as Wassily Kandinsky.
The brief discussion above, it is easy see why Art Deco pottery is so eclectic and glamorous. Many high quality parts have not yet found their way into private hands, so that the work is very collectible today.
